How do you feel when the minority student gains admission to the
university you applied for, and you were rejected due to your
color, not your academic record? In this \land of the free""
attitude that labels our cultural beliefs, some events and
decisions lead us to contradict this apparent outlook.

Students, in the last Associated Students of Madison election,
you asked Student Services Finance Committee to give you your

Greetings newcomers and veterans, and welcome to'or back to' our
peaceful little isthmus here in sunny southcentral Wisconsin. My
name is Dan Hinkel and I'll be your intermittently friendly
Wednesday columnist. Go ahead and e-mail me, and I will promptly
disregard all suggestions or questions, stylistic, substantial or
otherwise.

For the adventurous and the daring, there is an alternate form
of education that teaches leadership skills and provides a
comfortable social setting for students and adults of all ages.
Look no further than the Memorial Union to find a club in which
people can participate in horseback riding, rock climbing, hang
gliding or even scuba diving.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in Worcester, Mass., the Wisconsin
men's varsity crew team exorcised 56 years of futility in the
premiere event at the Eastern Sprints by winning the Varsity Eight
event in a scorching time of 5:36.6 against Harvard's second-place
time of 5:38.1. The last time the Badgers won the Varsity Eight
event was in 1946, when the race was held in Annapolis, Md., and
Harry S. Truman was president of the United States.

For the nine seniors and Head Coach Jeff Sauer, this weekend's
best-of-three Western Conference Hockey Association's playoff
series against the Minnesota State University-Mankato Mavericks
will be the last home series. However, as Coach Sauer pointed out,
there is no time to think about that.

The governor's race is just about to heat up. Last Wednesday, I
had the opportunity to talk with Wisconsin's most interesting
candidate, Ed Thompson. Ed is the brother of Tommy Thompson, the
former Republican governor of Wisconsin. However, this Thompson is
more like a Russ Feingold reform populist, running on a Libertarian
ticket.

I am disturbed by the story regarding a multicultural community
being set up in Witte Residence Hall (""Witte
will house multicultural community,"" Oct. 30). I realize I am
merely a conservative, middle-class, white male student here at
UW-Madison and might not be as enlightened as most of my peers on
campus, but I do not understand how grouping a large portion of the
""students of color"" together in a dorm will solve any diversity
problems that may exist here on campus.

The Yang house is silent and dark. A white custom Chevy van
waits in the driveway, gradually losing its fight with rust. Across
the street, a defective streetlight hesitates and flickers off.
Suddenly, the Yang rooster crows from the garage. The streetlight
flickers back on. The rooster crows again, insistent this time.
Once more.

This past week has not been the easiest for our nation. However,
this is America, and we will survive. For an example, I turn yet
again to George Washington.

A 91-year-old Monona Bay boathouse, long in disrepair, will be

I have never run into a burning building to save an elderly lady
and her beloved cat. I have never tamed a wild horse and ridden it
bareback into the sunset. I have never navigated the Indian Ocean
on a boat crafted with my own two hands out of old Raisin Bran
boxes and Elmer's Glue.
