Across the country, 24 states - including Wisconsins neighbors
Illinois and Minnesota - have passed statewide smoking bans.
Wisconsin, on the other hand, has failed to pass a similar
statewide ban every year since 2003. On Thursday, the Dane County
Board voted in favor of a county-wide smoking ban, placing greater
pressure on state lawmakers to realize the pressing need for a
uniform, statewide ban on public smoking.

Prepare yourself for a taste of the theocratic in the near
future. Nearly every election cycle, prominent church figures walk
a fine line between an Internal Revenue Service mandate and the
right to free speech when they begin to get political in their
pulpits. Despite the government's opposition to religious figures
endorsing candidates, the preachers are fighting back en
masse.

In an age where media outlets control national exposure to
election campaigns, the responsibility for casting a true, unbiased
vote is solely on the voters. Political coverage has become clouded
by biased media outlets and talk-show hosts at a time when our
country's future hangs in the balance. No longer can we rely on the
news to provide us with clear and informative insights into each
candidate's platform.

I wonder why much of the world considers Americans lazy. Maybe
it is because dead batteries in a remote control have reduced some
to tears. Perhaps it is the fact that nearly a quarter of American
adults are completely physically inactive by choice. Or maybe it is
because they simply do not have the decency to get out of their car
to order and pick up their venti iced vanilla latte.

At last year's annual Mifflin Street Block Party, many may
recall the clever protest of numerous students dressed as zombies,
roaming the streets with signs and outstretched arms. Their message
was simple: The event had shifted from its original purpose in 1969
as a Vietnam protest and become a desensitized and meaningless
drinkfest.

Last week, the U.S. government's National Toxicology Program
suggested that there may be some concern"" with Bisphenol A (BPA),
a very common type of plastic found in a huge assortment of
everyday household objects: electronics, CDs, medical equipment
and, perhaps most importantly, water bottles. The greatest danger
lies with plastic water bottles because BPA slowly leaches out into
the drink the bottle contains. This is especially disquieting
considering the vast amount of plastic Nalgene bottles (which
contain this polymer) used on this campus and college campuses
everywhere. Thus, until the government conducts more research, a
temporary ban of BPA used in food containers is necessary.
