The state of environmental politics in America is well summed up
by an episode that occurred last week here in Madison: state Rep.
Spencer Black, D-Madison, proposed to re-establish the Office of
the Public Intervenor.

Saturday kicks off what should be the most competitive Big Ten
conference season in years. Nearly every team believes it has what
it takes to contend for the title. Even programs beginning anew at
Illinois and Indiana showed more life during the non-conference
portion of the schedule than they have in years. Though the team
that becomes the 2005 Big Ten champion may not be playing for the
Roses and a national title this year, it will likely be because the
rugged conference schedule will allow no team to emerge
undefeated.

\Arrested Development's"" April 17 season finale may signify the
end of the critically-acclaimed series. Despite its numerous
awards, its low ratings have damaged the series. However, a
dedicated group of fans are working to keep the show alive.

I am currently in a student organization that occasionally puts
on programming for high school students. Friday we put on a program
called Leadership Retreat, in which kids from across Wisconsin came
to Madison for a day to learn about leadership in high school and
beyond.

Associated Students of Madison decided Tuesday to use the $1.2
million segregated-fee surplus to, among other things, offset next
year's fees and fund the bus program. ASM's reserve board struck
down two other proposals that would have utilized a portion of the
surplus.

Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, but always impassioned,
the Rev. Al Sharpton ignited a capacity crowd yesterday in the
Memorial Union Theater as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.
Discussing issues from the 2004 presidential election to gay
marriage, Sharpton encouraged students to never succumb to
apathy.

It was a spring day like any other on the UW-Madison campus. The
sun was shining, the snow was melting (and freezing again) and the
birds were nowhere to be found-they had the foresight to study
abroad in Mexico. I was my usual self, walking back from
class-tired and thinking of the delicious mocha high that would
bring me through yet another day.

The bad blood between the Badgers and the Gophers has existed
for years. In fact, the battle between the two furry mammals has
gone on for 113 years in Division I football.

An endless stream of commentators have spent the last few years
pointing out that the Bush administration's war on terror, not to
mention its entirely unrelated war on Iraq, are enormous failures
that have alienated Muslims and strengthened al-Qaida. Now the
Pentagon is saying it too. The Defense Science Board Task Force on
Strategic Communication, a Pentagon task force on the \struggle for
hearts and minds"" of the Muslim world in the global war on
terrorism, has reported, ""American efforts have not only failed,
they may also have achieved the opposite of what they
intended.""

The battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe was a defining chapter in the
Badgers' season. All year, the mantra for the Badgers has been
\1-0"" and they have achieved their goal so far. After nearly every
game, however, Head Coach Barry Alvarez has also said, ""I think
the offense has some things to improve on."" Saturday, they finally
did.
(11/08/04 6:00am)
The trophy case had been empty for the past year and the
Wisconsin Badgers were not happy about it. They had lost Paul
Bunyan's Axe on a last-second field goal last season, but were
determined to get it back Saturday.

For the University of Minnesota football team (3-3 Big Ten, 6-3
overall) it is said that as the running game goes, so go the
Gophers' fortunes. The University of Wisconsin Badgers (5-0, 8-0)
are well aware of this fact as they hope to contain the U of M
ground game and recapture Paul Bunyan's Axe Saturday at Camp
Randall.

Minnesota and Wisconsin have one of the oldest and greatest
rivalries in college sports history, and this weekend another
chapter of that rivalry will be written-both on the turf and on the
ice. The disturbing part is that two teams from two of the major
revenue-producing sports and two of the more popular sports are
being played in two separate cities.
(11/04/04 6:00am)
Going into Saturday's final Camp Randall contest of the year
against Minnesota, the Badgers seem to have it all. They claim an
undefeated record, have one of the nation's top defenses and are
ranked fourth and fifth in the nation. However, Wisconsin is
determined to claim ownership of one more thing-the Paul Bunyan
Axe.
(11/04/04 6:00am)
Listening to players and coaches, you wouldn't know they are
approaching their final home game of the season. Surprising, only
because such an occasion each year brings the final home game of
many players' careers-the final jubilant charge through the tunnel
onto the Camp Randall turf. For 20 seniors, Saturday will be the
last time they will play at home in a Badger uniform.

Parents will begin driving and flying into Madison for Parents'
Weekend Saturday, meaning a majority of UW-Madison students will ax
their alternative weekend plans to spend it with mom and pop. On
the agenda for many families is the annual football match between
Wisconsin (5-0 Big Ten, 8-0 overall) and Minnesota (3-3, 6-3), in
which the team's \Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe."" Minnesota, the
underdog, hopes not to be bullied by the Badgers.
