Blood-soaked axes, murderous rampages, the Devil himself and a
singing Catholic schoolgirl? This strange collaboration of musical
carnage will come gushing into Madison this Sunday, when Massacre:
The Musical"" - a locally made independent film - premieres at the
High Noon Saloon at 8:30 p.m.

Exactly one year ago, I started this same column with these
words: Please, let me state the obvious. If UW head coach Bret
Bielema thought that taking over a program left behind by Barry
Alvarez was too much pressure, then wait until he has to top the
best record ever in Wisconsin football history when his team
returns next fall.

It is not ill conceived that a season where UW was ranked in the
top 10 of most major polls to start the year, but finished with
four losses after failing to live up to high expectations, is
followed with a tumultuous offseason.

in common? They all are key elements of one of Kurt Yaeger's

The Minnesota football team's record (0-8 Big Ten, 1-11 overall)
coming into Saturday's match up with Wisconsin (5-3, 9-3) was no
indication of the way the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe would turn
out.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In a back and fourth contest, the Wisconsin
Badgers prevailed over border rival Minnesota Golden Gophers in a
41-34 victory. The win gave Wisconsin its fourth straight season of
at least nine wins and its fourth straight win over
Minnesota.

Coming off of an emotional win last week against Michigan, the
UW football team looks to continue that feeling this Saturday as it
heads to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden
Gophers.

The Badgers (4-3 Big Ten, 8-3 overall) and Gophers (0-7, 1-10)

What ever happened to celebrations in the NFL? No, I'm not
talking about endzone celebrations or even the illustrious
hand-waving to signal a first down.

conversation makers, they're essential to the American economy.

For one last fall afternoon, UW seniors ran onto the field at
Camp Randall Stadium for one final chance to play football in front
of 80,000-plus screaming Badger faithful.

As a person of Irish descent, I have always looked fondly on my
Irish heritage. Most people do not believe that I'm Irish - mainly
because I am not a short, freckled man with red hair and a pot o'
gold - but are convinced once they realize that my last name is
Carey, which couldn't belong to any other nationality besides the
Irish.

In terms of sheer musical spectacle, you can scarcely do better
than Béla Fleck and the Flecktones tonight. Fronted by the best
and most innovative banjo player in the world and flanked by the
likes of Victor Wooten, whose bottomless bag of slap-happy licks on
the bass guitar has marked him the premiere player of his own
instrument, the Flecktones are in many ways the musical equivalent
of the Cirque du Soleil.

I still remember my first thought when Zach Hampton knocked down
Arkansas quarterback Casey Dick's Hail Mary to secure UW's second
straight Capital One Bowl victory: This team is going to be
something special next season. I can't wait for Sept. 1.""

A modern trend in the art of filmmaking has had writers and
directors striving to revamp old movies and old movie formulas into
technology-hyped, teen-esque remakes. Examples are ""Joy Ride,""
""Swimfan,"" ""Brick"" and now, ""Disturbia,"" a credible thriller
and wholly decent high school version of the 1954 Jimmy Stewart
flick ""Rear Window.""

Some films prefer to ease their audiences in gently, allowing
some time for story orientation and character introductions as
opposed to, say, opening with a shot of Justin Timberlake and
Christina Ricci having hip-tickling, sweat-drenched sex. ""Black
Snake Moan"" is not one of those films. Fortunately, it isn't
Timberlake's newest music video either, as my description might
suggest, but rather, the first twang in a movie that throbs like a
soul-strumming guitar accompanied by the frantic rattling of
chains.

The UW football team will ride into Iowa City on a high after
winning six straight games and falling to Michigan early in the
year. However, over the last few seasons, UW has not had much
success when playing the Hawkeyes. In fact, the Badgers have been
on the losing side of the ball four consecutive seasons in a row.
