A bookcase holding my innumerable DVD box sets has a special
shelf that should probably be labeled ""The Boneyard."" It holds
the complete series sets of ""Dead Like Me,"" ""Freaks and Geeks""
and ""Undeclared,"" to name a few of the remnants of once-great TV
series cancelled before their time. And while a few of those fallen
series were axed in momentary lapses of judgment on the part of HBO
or ABC, one network stands bloody axe in hand as a serial killer of
great television—Rupert Murdoch's Fox Broadcasting Company.

This weekend, I will be in the press box at Ryan Field in
Evanston, Ill., watching the Badgers take on Northwestern. Once the
game and the interviews are over, I'll blast out of Illinois and
back to Madison, praying to make it home in time to catch the end
of a game halfway across the country.

There's nothing better than a great college football rivalry
game.

The frigid morning air roused my shivering body into a wakeful
state. My mind wasn't quite there, and I felt like I'd just
suffered a pretty decent amount of head trauma. It was dark, too
dark for what time it must have been... Where the hell was I? The
smell of manure and rotting hay filled my nostrils, and I vomited
the little food that was left in my stomach all over the cement
floor. My mouth was dry—really dry—what I would have given for a
glass of water. Where was I, and what day was it? What had happened
last night? Many questions awaited my unprepared head.

In his column On Oct. 1, sports columnist Ben Breiner blamed the
empty student section on apathetic students. ""Wisconsin's student
fan culture does not give a crap about the football game,"" he
wrote. I disagree. It's not that the students don't care about the
game, they are late because they care about beer more.

State Sen. Alan Lasee, R-De Pere, has always been an interesting
character. Perhaps it comes with the territory, as he is stranded
over in the corner of the state in Door County, surrounded by
tourists and cranberry farmers. Or it just might be the cowboy hat
he totes around on his head. However it came about, Lasee has a
reputation of being an interesting lawmaker, and with that comes
interesting ideas. One of Lasee's most recent initiatives is
actually one of his old standbys: give the offices of secretary of
state and lieutenant governor the axe in Wisconsin.

Bret Bielema has instilled a contagious attitude in his team
this year: work hard, be proud and play with class. Against its
biggest rival, and playing for the coveted axe, Wisconsin displayed
all three of those attitudes.

MINNEAPOLIS—As the Wisconsin Badgers paraded around TCF Bank
Stadium's field with Paul Bunyan's axe, allowing as many red clad
fans to touch it as they could, the celebration almost felt like an
emotional release of all the tension that led up to it.

Blake Sorensen: The battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe is a game all
players get psyched for, especially Minnesota native and junior
linebacker Blake Sorensen.

It says something about the rivalry when Paul Bunyan's Axe came
out in the locker room after Wisconsin held off Michigan State.
Make no mistake about it, this game is special.

Junior wide receiver Isaac Anderson didn't have to wait long for
his time to shine in 2009.

I hate to jump the gun and turn into one of those overexcited
fans, but if you're looking at what Wisconsin has done so far, and
looking ahead at its schedule, there's a strong possibility the
Badgers could be headed for a major postseason date in January.

Wisconsin head football coach Bret Bielema made it clear in his
weekly press conference Monday morning that his team's win over
Michigan State last week is old news.

Last week, students and UW campus leaders came together for a
forum titled ""In the Wake: Plan 2008."" In this particular
instance, a ""wake"" seems a fitting word to call it, considering
Plan 2008 collapsed under its own high expectations.

If I may borrow from Garrison Keillor, it has been another quiet
off-season in Green Bay, my hometown. Free agency yielded a number
of exciting stories across the league, from the big-time pickups in
Kansas City to the axing and reclaiming of Terrell Owens. But once
again, the Packers remain absent from the headlines while the rest
of the league spends time wheeling and dealing.
