Every time a new game gets a good review, the reviewer always
seems to mention that the game 'revived a genre' or 'reinvented'
something. These statements are both absurd and true. What these
games really did was try something new and got it to work,
something games don't try enough of these days. One can only
circle-strafe and shoot Nazis so many times before it becomes
tiresome. Today, games suffer from a lack of creativity, so when
one breaks out a little bit we tend to notice.

Those who are about to experience their first Madison Halloween
missed out on last year's itinerary, which included such popular
events as the 500-block bonfire, the drunk asshole punching a horse
and the tear gassing of several hundred \sexy cops"" by the much
more heavily armed and less sexy ""actual cops.""

Al Pacino may be one of the greatest actors in history. But when
he gets phone-it-in roles like he does in \Two for the Money,"" his
performances are as interesting as watching a TV rerun you've seen
a million times-you know exactly what you're going to get.

After other summer documentary surprises \March of the
Penguins"" and ""The Aristocrats"" comes ""Mad Hot Ballroom,""
which has been traveling the festival and art-house circuit since
April and debuts this week at the Orpheum. This film focuses on a
unique program introduced to New York City's public elementary
schools in which students learn ballroom dancing in preparation for
a citywide competition. It's clear from the film that this program
offers New York kids-some of whom are quite disadvantaged-a
distinctive, creative outlet and a good way to get past boy-girl
social awkwardness. What is not clear is why an entire
hour-and-a-half movie should be devoted to it. Despite the positive
things the ballroom dancing program provides, it is not profound
enough to merit a feature-length film.

BioWare has never shied away from success. For a long time they
have developed the best role-playing games on the market, including
the \Baldur's Gate"" and ""Neverwinter Nights"" series along with
2003's smash hit ""Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic."" With a
pedigree like that, their most recent game, ""Jade Empire,"" was
sure to be a hit.

The saying goes that all good things must come to an end. For
the UW men's basketball team, this was all too familiar Sunday when
their travel plans to St. Louis for the Final Four were cancelled.
Sixth-seeded Wisconsin (25-9) bowed out of the tournament and the
2004-'05 season after a close 88-82 battle with the heavily favored
No. 1 seed UNC Tar Heels (31-4).

Sunday's Big Ten Championship game between Illinois and
Wisconsin featured four players selected as first team
all-conference performers. However, the difference in the Illini's
11 point victory did not come from their heralded trio of guards,
but rather from senior forward Roger Powell Jr. and junior forward
James Augustine, who contributed on both ends of the court and
stifled the Badgers all afternoon.

Another home win, another near heart-breaker. As uplifting as it
was for the Badger faithful to see sophomore forward Alando
Tucker's buzzer beating tip-in send the Indiana Hoosiers home
disappointed with a 62-60 loss, the failure to clamp down on a big
lead early is not a good sign of things to come.

Tonight's game between the No. 20 Wisconsin Badgers (9-5 Big
Ten, 19-7 overall) and the Indiana Hoosiers (9-5, 14-11) will have
added significance as both squads enter tied for third in the Big
Ten standings. Both teams have one game remaining before the start
of the Big Ten Tournament on March 10 in Chicago, Ill.

The Wisconsin women's basketball team hoped to pull out a road
win in their final game before the Big Ten Tournament.
Unfortunately, freshman guard Jolene Anderson's game-high 26-point
performance proved insufficient to give Wisconsin the victory as
Purdue won its regular season finale, 69-59.

A good sign of a talented basketball team is its ability to
rebound from losses, making sure to put together as few losing
streaks as possible. An even better sign of a talented basketball
team is when they are able to avooid a single losing streak over
the course of an entire season. After their 64-56 victory against
the Ohio State Buckeyes (7-7 Big Ten, 18-10 overall) in Columbus,
Ohio, the No. 20 Wisconsin Badgers upped their record to 7-0 in
games following a loss.

During the 1993 NBA finals, Chicago Bulls guard John Paxson hit
a three-pointer with 5.3 seconds remaining to give his team a
'99-'98 victory and the NBA's first three-peat champions since the
Celtics dynasty of the '60's. Paxson, who said he set up at the arc
\just in case something happened"" hit the historic ""shot heard
around the world"" to stop MVP Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns
from forcing a game seven.

With 2:46 left in the first half of the Badger victory over
Michigan, senior forward Zach Morley went up for the offensive
board before landing hard on his back, his face grimaced in pain.
As the Kohl Center held its collective breath waiting to see if
Morley would have to be helped off he court, he carefully stood up
and jogged off the court to the relief of the 17,142 people in
attendance.

The Wisconsin women's basketball team ran out of their recent
Kohl Center magic Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 9 Michigan State
84-60.
(02/11/05 6:00am)
When the first-half horn sounded, one had to wonder what had
happened to the Wisconsin offense that put up 88 points Sunday.
Wisconsin found itself trailing Illinois 28-20 behind freshman
guard Jolene Anderson's first-half, team-high six points. In the
second half the Badgers finally found their touch and converted 18
of 21 free throws to complete the 65-60 comeback win.

The No. 21 Wisconsin men's basketball team (6-3 Big Ten, 15-5
overall) will take on an underrated Iowa Hawkeyes team (3-5, 15-6)
Wednesday night at the Kohl Center. If you are one of those people
already keeping count, the Badgers will be playing for their second
consecutive home win. More importantly, they will be attempting to
rebound from a dismal performance in Minnesota last weekend when
Gopher junior guard/forward Vincent Grier lit up the Badgers for 32
points and Wisconsin lost 60-50.
(02/07/05 6:00am)
The Wisconsin women's basketball team stunned No. 25 Iowa 88-78
Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Badgers (3-7 Big Ten, 9-11
overall) were carried by junior guard Ashley Josephson's
career-high 29 points. Iowa (4-6 Big Ten, 15-6 overall) carried a
9-1 record at home into the game.

Imagine your basketball team has strong perimeter shooting (even
your back-up center has hit four from behind the arc in a game),
has a point guard whose brother plays for the Spurs, and lacks only
a strong low post presence.
