After falling to 0-4 in Big Ten play over winter break, the Badgers had a chance to salvage their sinking ship of a Big Ten record against a weak program. Instead, Wisconsin (0-5 Big Ten, 5-13 overall) sunk to a 30-point loss at the hands of Penn State (2-4, 12-6) and squandered a chance to finally add its first Big Ten win under head coach Jonathan Tsipis.

Following their first loss in the Big Ten at the hands of No. 17 Purdue, the No. 18 Wisconsin Badgers (2-1 Big Ten, 13-3 overall) return home to Madison to welcome a struggling Ohio State (0-3, 10-6) team that has yet to win a top-level matchup this season.

The Big Ten season is finally at the doorstep, and everyone is chomping at the bit to get things underway. There are 126 games before the conference tournament starts, and every team technically has a shot at the regular season title—even Rutgers. The Badgers are the favorite to take the crown, but there are several teams that stand in their way. They'll play each team before the season is through, and a few stand a good shot at beating them.

The Badgers came into Green Bay with wins against Butler (3-7), Tennessee State (3-5), Illinois State (3-6) and Mississippi Valley State (3-5), while UWGB had gone 8-1 up to that night, with the one loss coming at the hands of the No. 2 team in the country, Notre Dame.

By several different measures, this was arguably the greatest semester in Wisconsin athletic history. The football team went from unranked all the way up to No. 8 in the country, providing plenty of heart-stopping moments along the way and coming up just shy of a Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff berth. The volleyball team earned its first ever No. 1 ranking before falling in heart-breaking fashion in the Elite Eight. The men's soccer team went all the way to the Big Ten Championship and the women's soccer team beat Marquette to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Then the leaves changed and the winter sports began and women's hockey beat Minnesota to prove its No. 1 ranking. The men's hockey team began the Granato Era and beat Michigan for the first time in three years. And while the men's basketball team started off a bit slow, the Cardinal and White have turned it around to win five straight.

Senior forward Nigel Hayes received some important advice yesterday from an unlikely source hours before his team faced off against Oklahoma. “Play hard, aggressive, find your teammates,” Hayes’ mother told him on a phone call prior to UW’s matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners Saturday afternoon.

Nigel Hayes caught the ball on the Big Ten logo just below the foul line—as he had all night—and glanced at freshman guard D’Mitrik Trice on the wing. But instead of hitting Trice with a pass, he slipped the ball between two orange jerseys to redshirt sophomore forward Ethan Happ, who found himself wide open underneath for an easy one-handed jam.

After a disappointing showing in the Maui Invitational Championship against North Carolina, Wisconsin shored up all their weak spots that led to the loss, and showcased the kind of high-level play expected of them.

Though they were recently smothered on the boards by North Carolina in the Maui Invitational Championship Game, the Badgers have spent the bulk of this season snagging just about every rebound available.

The 1980s were something of a golden age for film. “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Princess Bride” and “The Breakfast Club” are only a small sliver of cinematic brilliance that came out of the decade. It is difficult to pin down any one reason why the ‘80s films were so successful, but I think it is because of the energy and precision the directors and filmmakers infused into their work. The narratives were airtight, the characters were well-developed and the quality of the films were unparalleled for their time. That same level of craft seems harder to come by in contemporary movies, so when I do come across such a film, the result is something incredibly special. And my goodness, did I find something incredible with “Sing Street.”

The Marquee International Film Festival arrived this past weekend, hosted by the WUD Film Committee. Each day was packed with spectacular films from more than 25 countries that spanned an array of genres and storylines to give viewers a taste of what these diverse perspectives have to offer. This was also the first time WUD Film has hosted this type of film festival, and in my eyes, it was a successful event that I hope to see more of in the future.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has been a highly anticipated movie since it was first announced. As the follow-up to Zack Snyder’s polarizing film “Man of Steel,” the time leading up to the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe was ripe with debate. Who will win, Batman or Superman? Will this film make up for the missteps in “Man of Steel?” Will it be successful? With the film having flown into theaters on March 25, we have some answers to those questions—sort of.
