The vast majority of legendary director Mike Nichols' films
explore the nuances of relationships and sexual behavior, from
1966's \Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"" to his recent HBO work
(""Angels in America,"" ""Wit""). Hell, even ""What Planet Are You
From?"" used Garry Shandling's humming alien penis to shed some
insight on the tricky nature of relationships So it comes as no
surprise that his latest is another seriocomic look at the trials
and tribulations of love. But ""Closer,"" the star-studded
adaptation of Patrick Marber's controversial play, is a forceful,
incisive dramedy akin to a Neil LaBute movie without the stilted
dialogue; it is a piercing, vibrant piece of work that is one of
this year's most notable cinematic accomplishments.

\What's been lost in the last couple days [in the lottery
situation] we believe,"" said UW Deputy Athletic Director Jamie
Pollard at a town hall-style meeting the Athletic Department held
at the Kohl Center Monday, ""is how proud we are of the student
support.""

Ever since last weekend when the powers that be snatched away an
hour of precious sleep in the name of daylight savings, things have
just seemed off. I've been tired, restless and unable to summon the
energy to verbally assail Bush campaign ads with my usual
gusto.

Madison's Alcohol License Review Committee will discuss a
proposal Wednesday to allow local restaurant, bar and club owners
to apply for a \Visual and Performing Arts License,"" which would
allow underage students into venues to see live shows and
performances.

Sometime in the last five years, I became intensely aware of
just how rude and inconsiderate many moviegoers are. Without fail,
I always manage to sit next to some complete moron that's just
begging for a swift tire-iron upside the head. People pay up to $10
to go see a film in a theater and then act no differently than if
it were playing in their comfy living room. So, in the vein of
stand-up comedian George Carlin's bit \Complaints and Grievances,""
here's a simple list of movie-goers who oughta be killed.

Gregory Maguire's latest book, \Mirror, Mirror,"" takes the
classic story of Snow White and puts a historical twist on it.
Maguire guides a girl, Bianca de Nevada, from her breezy life on
her father's farm, Montefiore, in Tuscany through the dark side of
a fairy tale with the infamous Cesare Borgia.

\The anti-war movement here and abroad must give its
unconditional support to the Iraqi anti-colonial resistance."" With
this statement, which was published in brochures and repeated in
recent public demonstrations, the international group Act Now to
Stop War and End Racism has finally made clear its alliance with
fascists.

Our country is currently mired in a staggering deficit due to
the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush Administration. Spending
cuts, or even spending limitations, have not been used to balance
the huge tax cuts Bush forced through Congress. The reputation of
the Republican Party as deficit hawks has evaporated as spending
increases under Bush have surpassed those under Clinton. Fiscal
conservatives and moderate Democrats have every reason to be
worried about our massive budget shortfall.

Vin Diesel, suddenly a hot commodity in Hollywood, is a
stereotypical action hero. Diesel is muscular and has a commanding
voice. With a modern, brash attitude that simply emanates from
every glance, the guy is simply made for one-dimensional tough guy
characters. His latest, the revenge flick \A Man Apart,"" is yet
another disappointing entry into the action genre. Diesel lacks the
ability to convey any significant emotion. Combine this with an
ending that is unsatisfactory at best and the audience is left with
a film that had the potential but fails to be the solid popcorn
flick it wishes it could be.

In these tumultuous times, some are unsure of exactly how to
express an opinion that might deviate from our current government's
foreign policies. Taste would dictate that nothing be too harsh
while soldiers are off dying half a world away. Celebrities,
especially, are always on thin ice, if for no other reason than
celebrities blabbing on about their opinions usually come off as a
pack of pompous jackasses. Adrien Brody's speech at the Oscars came
off as sublime, while Michael Moore's tirade was just plain
ridiculous.

I just returned from a wonderfully relaxing ski trip this spring
break. The only downside is this stuffy nose I caught on the slopes
and, of course, the war.

Last week, after tumultuous riots in Nigeria, Turkey's Azra Akin
was crowned \Miss World"" in front of a television audience of more
than 1 billion viewers. Earlier in the month, CBS shocked
television viewers by airing a parade of scantily clad models in
the Victoria's Secret fashion show. While these events are really
quite commonplace, they serve as excellent examples of the media
images of beauty that bombard us on a daily basis.

Please clarify the editorial policy of The Daily Cardinal. Just
about every week, a story is printed about the high rate of binge
drinking on college campuses, UW-Madison in particular, and the
dangers of excessive drinking to students. As well as how the
elimination of drink specials will \drive college-age drinkers ...
to unregulated, unsupervised and potentially dangerous house
parties."" Then Wednesday the staff opinion, in a complete
contradiction, bemoans the possible re-establishment of Operation
Sting (""Op Sting must be avoided,"" April 10). So
which is it? Does the Cardinal seek to protect students or place
them in harm's way?

Old habits die hard, especially for the UW men's basketball
team. Wisconsin was held without a field goal for the final
five-and-a-half minutes Wednesday, falling 62-61 to Georgia Tech in
Atlanta.
