Across the country, 24 states - including Wisconsins neighbors
Illinois and Minnesota - have passed statewide smoking bans.
Wisconsin, on the other hand, has failed to pass a similar
statewide ban every year since 2003. On Thursday, the Dane County
Board voted in favor of a county-wide smoking ban, placing greater
pressure on state lawmakers to realize the pressing need for a
uniform, statewide ban on public smoking.

Prepare yourself for a taste of the theocratic in the near
future. Nearly every election cycle, prominent church figures walk
a fine line between an Internal Revenue Service mandate and the
right to free speech when they begin to get political in their
pulpits. Despite the government's opposition to religious figures
endorsing candidates, the preachers are fighting back en
masse.

As the presidential candidates continue to duke it out in
Wisconsin, a smaller battle will be waged in court this Friday, and
its outcome may make it harder for some Wisconsin voters to cast
their ballot come Election Day.

Although Wisconsin may have voted yes to the gay marriage ban
only two years ago, at least Dane County is ready to correct the
state's shortsighted decision to strip equal rights from domestic
partners in same-sex marriage.

Complaints of poor maintenance in buildings below housing code
and reports of slow response time from property owners are
extremely common among student tenants in Madison. According to
court documents filed last week, the parents of Brittany
Zimmermann, who was slain in her West Doty St. apartment on April
2, the inaction of Zimmermann's landlord, Wisconsin Management,
Inc., played a role in her murder.

Have you ever appreciated the ease with which Madison allows its
college students to register for elections at the state and federal
level? Polling locations on or near campus demand little proof of
identity, hardly any hurdles and virtually no drawbacks or caveats
to engaging in the electoral process. In Virginia, however, local
authorities have complicated this democratic procedure,
specifically for the students of the Virginia Tech campus.

The athletic department has a recurring dream concerning student
section seating at Camp Randall. It's an Orwellian dream where
students uniformly file into their assigned section, and since Big
Brother is watching, students wouldn't dare sit somewhere other
than their assigned seat. Unfortunately, this hypothetical euphoria
doesn't translate to reality. In the real world, student seating is
never going to be perfect, and it's hard to imagine such a
situation.

After a dismal year for the Dane County 911 Center - in which
public support and faith in the program plummeted - the opportunity
to turn the page has finally arrived. Dane County executives and

As a result of the Dane County 911 Center's failing to return
Brittany Zimmermann's call for help, many more questions and issues
have been brought to light. One of the most important issues facing
the Madison Police Department is the student body's loss of faith
in the 911 system.

In light of both the Virginia Tech shootings and the Brittany
Zimmermann murder, UW-Madison officials have implemented the
WiscAlert-Text system to warn students of possible emergencies on
campus. The new text alert system was also influenced heavily by
the lack of communication during the Jesse Miller incident earlier
this academic year.

As the academic year comes to an end, thousands of students will
once again descend upon the Mifflin Street Block Party. As security
concerns increase, so does enforcement of necessary laws to ensure
the safety of UW-Madison students enjoying one last hurrah before
finals begin.

Last week, 14 newly elected representatives of Associated
Students of Madison's Student Council issued a press release
proposing several reforms that, while short and unarticulated,
appeared to represent a step in the right direction for an
organization that has become disconnected with the student body.
Since these proposed changes lacked details, The Daily Cardinal
Editorial Board spoke with a number of newly elected ASM
representatives on Monday.
