If you are choosing to see a movie with the title ""Valentine's
Day,"" you have to be aware of the quality that you can expect from
it. This star-studded chick flick, directed by Garry Marshall,
opened in a transparently opportunistic fashion, just in time for
the holiday of the same name. When watched with low expectations
and a complete detachment from reality, the film offers exactly
what it promises to provide—a superficial distraction from the
concept of real life without any lingering impression.

If a movie sells itself as the coming-of-age tale of an awkward
teenage boy obsessively trying to lose his virginity, it had better
offer an interesting twist on this tired and overused plot. ""Youth
in Revolt,"" directed by Miguel Arteta, attempts to put a quirky
and original spin on the overdone, panicky, adolescent quest for
sex, wherever it can be found.

Disney has a way of tugging at your heartstrings. From ""Lady
and the Tramp"" to ""WALL-E,"" their movies get me every time. So
when I was dished up a big helping of baby ducklings in the new
movie ""Earth,"" I was delighted to be back in this adorable, fuzzy
world.

In high school, there was one class project that was always met
with widespread enthusiasm: the video. In an atmosphere where
narcissism reigns supreme, the popularity of watching oneself
onscreen comes as no surprise. However, with these projects came
the inevitable inside jokes - the videos were only entertaining for
those that made them. Be Kind Rewind,"" a story of homemade videos,
suffers a similar fate.

With finals right around the corner and a foot of snow covering
the ground, finishing out the semester can seem unbearable. In
Madison, there is no better way to combat end-of-semester woes than
to attend the long-time annual production of Tchaikovsky's The
Nutcracker."" Madison Ballet, originally known as the Wisconsin
Dance Ensemble, has been performing a seasonal production of ""The
Nutcracker"" since 1981. Over the years, it has embedded itself in
the Madison holiday spirit, providing young local dancers with the
opportunity to perform a theatrical classic for a mass
audience.

Books, it seems, are always better than their movie adaptations.
While a film may have adequately recreated a novel's plot and
characters, it can never fully establish the connection one has
reading it. It is one thing to spend weeks with a book, imagining
its characters in your head, and it is quite another to have the
same story told to you in a matter of hours, with the characters
splashed in front of your eyes. Love in the Time of Cholera""
exemplifies this book/movie trade off, and is a film that may have
been better off staying a novel.

At one point during Rendition,"" Meryl Streep's character
defends the use of torture to acquire information, stating, ""There
are upwards of 7,000 people in central London alive tonight because
of information that we elicited just this way."" A movie with such
controversial ideas seems to guarantee, at the very least, some
degree of enthusiasm from its viewers. However, if a film tries to
squeeze too much into its two-hour run, any theme can become masked
by complications.

A powerful film can be compared to a powerful painting. While,
occasionally, a busy canvas can be executed to great effect,
simplicity is usually a virtue. Fierce People,"" an overly
complicated film, is a prime example of when more is actually less.
Any themes presented by the film are lost in the overwhelming plot
and bizarre characters.

Trailers for Eastern Promises"" depict the standard crime
thriller: Someone, often an overeager newcomer, kills the one man
no one can touch and, consequently, war breaks loose. The film,
although centralized in a Russian crime family, tells no such tale.
It is a story in which the line between good and evil is blurred.
While films like ""Goodfellas"" leave you with one-liners and an
irrational desire to join the mafia, the essence of ""Eastern
Promises"" is much more troubling.

I left the Student Organization Fair delightfully overwhelmed,
anticipating a full inbox after giving my e-mail out to clubs I'll
never have the time or energy to join. During my undergraduate
years, my goal is, in a nutshell, to try everything there is to
try. Time may turn out to be an issue, but that is another story.
Madison is a place of vast opportunity, primarily because one of
the nation's largest universities lies in the heart of the
city.
