Well, folks, “Breaking Bad” is over. It’s been over a month, and it had a good run. However, now that it’s over and there’s a gaping hole in our Sunday nights, we have to ask: What’s the new best show on TV? It’s time to come out of our “Breaking Bad” induced shock/withdrawal/tiny meth addiction—It’s no big deal guys, I can quit whenever I want—and figure out what we should be wasting our lives on now.

As if we needed another reason to love the Madison music scene, Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons), Kevin Jones (Bear’s Den) and producer Ian Grimble are bringing their brainchild, Communion, to Madison’s The Frequency for a monthly stop. Communion was formed in London in 2006 as a way for new bands to get out of the garage and onto a stage.

After losing to Ohio State in a hard-fought battle in Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 28, Wisconsin had the luxury of sitting at home watching those same Buckeyes face off against Northwestern in a prime-time matchup of then-undefeated Big Ten teams.

When I came to Wisconsin as a transfer student after spending a year at UCLA, one of the first things I tried to do was find a way to experience college athletics in a different way from that of the average student fan. I had been involved either on or off the field in sports for my entire life and didn’t want to cut that off because I was facing a bigger stage. But even I have to admit when I walked into the Cardinal office in September 2010 looking for an opportunity to cover the Badgers, there is no way I could have imagined the next three years playing out as they did.

Having already amassed three PGA Tour victories heading into the first major of the year, the Masters, Tiger Woods is seemingly back on top of the golf world. But even if Sunday comes and goes without Woods picking up his first major title since 2008, there is no doubt he has proven himself more than capable of continuing the push toward Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles.

As great as the NCAA Tournament is, March Madness comes packed with a brutal reality: one misstep and its all over. With one half of poor shooting, Wisconsin found that out the hard way, falling to 12th-seeded Ole Miss to bring a quick end to a postseason run many thought had a chance to go the distance.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Wisconsin (23-12 overall) found itself unable to score down the stretch and watched as Mississippi (27-8) finished on a 27-10 run over the final 11:35 to pull off a 57-46 upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Everyone in sports loves to praise the unnamed, “unsung heroes” who work behind the scenes to ensure athletes at every level have the best chance to succeed on the playing field. Quarterbacks love to shed praise on their linemen, pitchers love to talk about the impact of a catcher on a perfect game and golfers always give credit to their caddies for keeping them calm en route to a major championship.

CHICAGO- Storybook endings are nice but in the world of sports, they rarely come to fruition. After three games against top-10 competition this weekend in Chicago, the slipper finally fell off of Cinderella’s foot as No. 22 Wisconsin (12-6 Big Ten, 23-11 overall) went without a field goal over the final 7:03 that turned a 41-39 lead into a 50-43 loss at the hands of No. 10 Ohio State (13-5, 26-7).

CHICAGO—Normally when a team makes just four of its first 28 shots against the No. 6 team in the country, it is going to finish on the losing end. But if there is one thing we have learned about the 2012-’13 edition of Wisconsin men’s basketball, it is that they are anything but normal. Despite scoring just 17 points in the first half, the Ke$ha-loving Badgers (22-10 overall) found a second gear after halftime and put up 51 points over the final 20 minutes en route to a 68-59 victory over the Wolverines to advance to the Big Ten tournament semi-final round.

EAST LANSING, Mich.—Wisconsin did not get Michigan State’s best Thursday night. The Izzone was on spring break, the band was out of town and the Spartans couldn’t find the backside of a barn in the first half. The Badgers’ problem was that they couldn’t find it, either. Wisconsin (11-6 Big Ten, 20-10 overall) continued to struggle shooting the basketball, making just 15-of-51 (29 percent) from the field en route to a resounding 58-43 defeat in East Lansing, Mich.

Though it seemed as if Wisconsin had squandered any chance at a share of the Big Ten regular season title with Sunday’s senior day loss to Purdue, a win Thursday night in East Lansing would put the Badgers just a single win and an Indiana loss from the crown.

The old adage goes something like, “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” Unfortunately, the Badgers bought into that sentiment a bit too much Sunday afternoon, missing their final 18 attempts from 3-point range in a 69-56 loss at the hands of Purdue.

Wisconsin freshman forward Sam Dekker has slowly worked his way into the conversation for Big Ten freshman of the year with four straight games in double figures. But after a career-high 19 points Tuesday against Nebraska, Dekker not only has himself squarely in the driver’s seat for that honor, but may just be positioned for sixth man of the year as well. Checking in just six minutes into the game with the score tied at 8, Dekker helped the Badgers explode on a 24-2 run that erased what had been a 12-11 Nebraska lead and replaced it with a 35-14 UW advantage.

I hear it time after time: “College basketball’s regular season is irrelevant” or “Nothing matters until March”. Though I am usually successful in restraining myself from the onslaught of dispute I would like to unleash in response, the assertion continues to bother me. Sure, March Madness is fun, but such fun takes nothing away from the importance of the conference schedule. So please don’t change the tournament, because it is great as it is. As any coach or player would tell you, those advocating for such a change on the grounds that it renders the regular season irrelevant are completely off base.

EVANSTON, Ill.—Though you wouldn’t have known looking at the sea of red in the stands Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, the Badgers did indeed pick up a road win in Evanston, defeating the Wildcats (4-10 Big Ten, 13-14 overall) by a final of 69-41. Running out to a 9-0 lead before the first media break, Wisconsin (10-4, 19-8) never looked back, increasing its lead to 28-12 at the half and cruising home to a comfortable victory.

In over 100 years of basketball at Wisconsin, the Badgers had never played in three consecutive overtime games.

Wisconsin was two last-second shots away from a winless week at the Kohl Center. But what was oh-so-close to the last nail in the Badgers’ coffin ended up becoming a home stand that just may mark the defining moment in a Big Ten title run.

While you would be hard-pressed to find a Badger player or coach willing to admit it, Wisconsin has had this weekend’s matchup with No. 3 Michigan circled on the calendar for quite some time. Despite losing last weekend in Bloomington, Ind., the Wolverines (8-2 Big Ten, 21-2 overall) could easily be the best team in the nation and remain very much in control in a Big Ten race that is just about as tight as gets.

With No. 3 Michigan coming to town Saturday, the most common question I am getting has nothing to do with Wisconsin’s ability to defend sophomore guard Trey Burke or with Michigan’s lack of interior depth. No, the question I am getting time after time is simply: “Will we rush the court if we win?”
