Almost everyone knows two and only two things about Amsterdam;
One: It's legal to smoke pot (it's not really--but that's another
column) and, Two: prostitution is legal. Indeed, certain kinds of
prostitution are legal.

I watched the Academy Awards a few months back with a grim
fascination. Though I didn't want to watch it and was embarrassed
to do so, I felt compelled. So, my curiosity was satisfied, but in
the meantime I was disappointed to see \A Beautiful Mind"" win for
best film. I had seen it already and was disgusted at the
overblown, romanticized, blubbering heartwarmingness of it all.

One day there was a lovely family. A wife, a husband and four
beautiful children. They attended church every Sunday and were such
a lovely family that the city gave them an award reserved for the
loveliest of families.

Last week on morning TV, Laura Bush announced that the United
States was liberating Afghan women. Women in Afghanistan, as
dramatically demonstrated by the cover of Time, could actually show
their faces. You can sleep well tonight, America. I was livid.

In a class once, I had a student proudly tell a story about how,
in the army, he and his buddies used to gang rape the other male
soldiers. I was shocked and before I could act the students
responded, criticizing him. But he scoffed at their disapproval.
Instead of shrinking under their condemnation, he defended himself.

American babies are routinely mutilated in the first days of
life. Naked, strapped to a board with velcro, sensitive flesh is
exposed, torn and crushed- usually without anesthetic. A student
who described watching her newborn's circumcision said it was the
most horrifying thing she'd ever seen in her life-and that she'd
undoubtedly do it again if she had a second son. She said,
matter-of-factly, 'I'd want them to look alike.'

The UPS man stopped by my house Tuesday to drop off a package.
It required a signature, but I was at work, so the UPS man took it
back. The UPS man stopped by my house Wednesday to drop off the
package. Funny (funny strange, not funny ha-ha), I was at work, so
the UPS man took it back. The UPS man stopped by my house Thursday
to drop off the package. I knew he was coming but I had to do
something called work.

True story: I was driving through Berkeley on a sunny California
day. At the time, I was a community college instructor on my way to
teach a class at one of the five schools at which I worked
part-time. In a sexually suggestive way, a man hooted at me from
the window of a mini-truck, even though I was fully clothed with my
blonde hair under a baseball cap.
