University Health Services (UHS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has 64 mental health clinicians, five psychiatric providers, two psychiatric nurses and six full-time trainees who all provide mental health support to students. UHS received a budget of $29.9 million during the 2021-22 academic year — less than 1% of the university budget and almost $10 million less than what was allocated to the Wisconsin Union.

Six months ago, University of Wisconsin-Madison senior Jack Turco decided his diet was too strange and unique not to be shared online. At that time, Turco was strictly carnivorous, eating raw and cooked meats, and animal products exclusively while simultaneously performing at peak physical condition in his sport. Turco was previously a member of the Wisconsin men’s rowing team.

On Feb. 3, the Badger women’s ice hockey team skated out on the ice of the Kohl Center to a crowd seven times larger than the capacity of their usual LaBahn Arena. This was the seventh “Fill the Bowl” night — a game that contends for the NCAA’s most-attended women’s hockey game every time it’s played — and the first since the Badgers tied Ohio State 1-1 in 2020 in front of 14,361 fans.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison released a list of the majors that added the most students between the fall semesters of 2018 and 2022 last week. Topping the list was data science, which added 914 students since the major’s inception in 2018, followed by computer science with 642; both are contained within the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences.

Throughout the fall 2022 semester, over 83,000 students across all University of Wisconsin System schools were invited to participate in a survey regarding the state of civil dialogue on their campuses. The survey received more than 10,500 responses gauging students’ comfort with expressing their opinions in academic settings as well as their receptiveness to classmates. The results were reported by UW Systems President Jay O. Rothman on Wednesday, including the data analyzed in relation to factors like political affiliation, gender identity and race.

Benjamin Jealous spoke to members of the University of Wisconsin-Madison community at the Memorial Union as the keynote speaker for its Martin Luther King Jr., Symposium. The MLK Symposium, named after the civil rights leader who spoke in the very same hall in the 1960s, is held annually and features prominent Black individuals who have in some way advanced King Jr.’s fight. Past speakers include astronaut Mae Jemison and journalist Nikole Hannah-Brown.
