Pulse. A name fitting for a club that wasn’t just known as one of the “hottest gay bars” in Miami, but also for a place that was at the heart of the LGBT community in Orlando, Florida. On Sunday, June 12, the rhythm of Pulse was broken. From what authorities have confirmed, Omar Mateen walked into Pulse nightclub at 2 a.m. and opened fire into the crowd killing 50 people and wounding at least 53. This tragedy has been labeled as one of the most tragic mass shootings in the history of the U.S. In the wake of this, we as the American people must understand something: We can’t use this instance of violence to perpetuate hate.

I am gay. Three of the hardest words any person can think, feel or even say. Three words that start a journey, adventure and never-ending marathon. Three words that I have said before.

Women’s issues. Sexual assault is a women’s problem. Why are so many women being sexually assaulted? Why don’t we educate women on how to protect themselves?

A little more than a century ago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison was a completely different place than the campus we walk today. In 1840, just eight years before the founding of UW-Madison, the population of the Madison area consisted of 99 percent Ho-Chunk, and a mere one percent of non-Indian society. In a recent interview with Interim Assistant Dean and Director of the School of Education Aaron Bird Bear, conducted by UW-Madison Communications Director John Lucas, Bird Bear highlighted the transformation of the area, saying, “there has been a complete physical and social transformation of Dejope from a marshy burr oak savannah with much less forest cover.” This is compared to the hustling and bustling that we see today. If this complete physical and social transformation of our campus area has only happened in the past 170 years, why do only a small percentage of students take concern with this issue?

As humans in the 21st century, we live in a state of fear. Whether it’s emotional, psychological or physical, we have adapted to live with a certain amount of suspicion. In places where we should feel safe like restaurants, schools or the workplace, we can no longer feel safe enough to fully let down our guard. Recent attacks like those in San Bernardino, Paris or Colorado all attribute to this feeling of vulnerability.

Break out your Gap coupons and treat yourself to a new jean jacket because fall is officially here. It’s the beautiful mid-point between the thick, humid Wisconsin summers and dry, blistering-cold Wisconsin winters. It’s the season that most college students look forward to; the three months of the year when you aren’t dreading walking to class.

I’ve always been pretty average. I’m a white, middle-class male, maybe a little taller than most people. But I am special in one way. I’m one of the 10 percent of people in the world who are left handed, and let me tell you, it sucks. You know how Madonna said that she is a “Material Girl” living in a “material world?” Well, I’m a left-handed boy living in a right handed-world; we are the 10 percent.

I’m currently lying on my floor, next to a bowl of mashed potatoes, while my Adele album plays in the background and I neglect all of my responsibilities. My thoughts are wandering from school stress to student loans to the fact that I eventually have to grow up one day. One crucial question crosses my mind: When do you officially become an adult?
