$0.005205 per play. That’s what an artist makes every time his or her songs are streamed on Spotify. CD sales are incredibly sluggish, and if you are with a label, you’re making peanuts for every disc sold. So how do musicians make their money these days? Touring, touring and then, when the band is incredibly exhausted and on the verge of breaking up because they weren’t meant to spend four months together in a van significantly smaller than a dorm room, tour some more.

What is afrobeat? Afrobeat is a style of music that comes from adding traditional instruments and styles with popular contemporary music. Though it’s not quite jazz and not quite funk, afrobeat includes strong elements of both along with a heavy dose of the shekere and other African instruments. The other day, a friend and I found ourselves talking about who our biggest influences were musically and what we would say if we were ever interviewed. My friend said Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bob Seger, among others.

Jam bands, the oft-maligned subcategory of rock bands which write cheesy lyrics and play never-ending songs, happen to be my favorite kind of music. The genre itself is hard to define, but pretty much any band that “jams” can be a jam band.

There are some artists for whom “hype” cannot begin to describe how anticipated an album is. For Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city is just that. After the release of his independently released album Section 80, Kendrick Lamar became one of the biggest names in hip hop. The 25-year-old hails from Compton, Calif. and has accrued significant acclaim since his well-regarded mixtape, Overly Dedicated. Lamar attributes his greatest influences to Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre, the latter of which also called Compton home.

When one thinks of Phish, lengthy jams and snide hippy jokes often crop up first, but hardly ever their songwriting prowess. Furthermore, when one asks a Phish fan their thoughts on lead singer and guitar player Trey Anastasio’s side projects, they will probably be greeted with an eye-roll and a lengthy explanation as to either why these albums are the greatest thing to ever happen to Phish or the worst possible thing to ever happen to Phish.

Some strive for excellence in a single genre; however, Steven Ellison, known as Flying Lotus, hardly falls into one category. Since his first album, 1983, he has churned out critically acclaimed album after critically acclaimed album. For his fourth effort, Until the Quiet Comes, he creates a psychedelic soundscape, blending a strong Jazz influence with trip-hop accents.
