$380,921'that is the amount of funding denied to Collegians for
a Constructive Tomorrow by SSFC. They received approximately
$126,435 last year and requested $385,921 this year, according to
CFACT's intern program director, Lindsey Ourada. CFACT might have
spent more than its allocation for this year, $5,000, in one day
last year. They deserve to be scrutinized for their past spending
practices.

Parents will now be notified if their underage student at
UW-Madison is involved in extremely serious alcohol or drug
incidents due to a policy Chancellor John Wiley announced
Wednesday.

For those of us who are graduating in two weeks, the days seem
filled with ambiguity. There are those who look forward to
commencement with anticipation, secure in a future they've earned
and cannot wait to gain access to. For others who are just now
coming to the realization that a political science degree doesn't
guarantee them the seven-figure salary coming out of college they
were hoping for, time can not move slowly enough. Some still get
teary eyed each time they hear \Varsity"" at any given sporting
event, and others just want to curl up in a ball and pull their
hair out when the band strikes up ""If You Want To Be a Badger.""

The video \Affluenza,"" which critiqued, analyzed and outlined
the uniquely American obsession with greed, speaks to a disturbing
trend. While it was made in 1997, the materials presented in it are
still quite pertinent as the American Dream ethos and dogma are
pervasive in nature.

It all seemed to start out so innocently.

Halloween, at its best, is a celebration; a chance for students
to exercise creativity, blow off some post-midterm steam, and bear
witness to what is recognized nationally as one of most popular
parties in the country. But no event involving massive amounts of
students, liquor and opportunity for illicit behavior can ever make
a plausible claim as nothing but \wholesome fun."" As students of
UW, we have witnessed wanton destruction of property, little regard
for safety and careless actions primarily on our part over the last
three years.

The death penalty is an issue that evokes arguments that are
ideological, moral and practical in nature. It generates such
immense debate because its end result is one which exacts the most
ultimate of costs. There is no \appeal"" from death, no relief or
redress of grievances once an immoral costly error has been made.
To that end, many have argued for the elimination of the death
penalty, claiming that its effects serve ultimately no deterrent,
retributive or moral purpose. The converse of those arguments are
made by death penalty proponents, who find it a fitting means of
deterring the most heinous of crimes, while serving as a way
society expresses its denunciation of evil and wrong, and in doing
so affirms the intrinsic value of human life.

The situation is a familiar one. Returning from an evening out,
it's 3 a.m. and only the occasional streetlight pierces what is
otherwise a pitch-black night. Strolling past alleys and winding
around corners, you fear a cloaked figure lurks somewhere beneath
the cover of shadow. Senses begin to heighten, muscles tighten, and
a sudden nervous anxiety rears its ugly head.

The gay marriage controversy speaks to a climate of persecution
and victimization that extends far beyond the realms of political
rhetoric. The use of the term \gay"" to connote something
undesirable, stupid or sick is perhaps the most insidious form of
discrimination gay people face on a daily basis. Its continual use
in common discourse has found its way into the everyday language of
otherwise well-meaning or even tolerant individuals, causing
distressing social and emotional harm in ways that most of those
who use the term do not understand.

Many critics have pointed to the destructive effect that the
violent and suggestive lyrics have had on both inner-city youth and
rural-area teenagers with no discernable intimate connection to the
music's message. However, regardless of who the listener may be,
rap music has had a detrimental effect on people who either do not
understand the underlying message or only indulge in the more
materialistic, promiscuous genre without understanding the
sacrifices necessary to attain such status.

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to take a trip to Oak
Hill Correctional Institution, a minimum-security prison located in
nearby Oregon, Wis. Now, I know what you're thinking: minimum
security? Thoughts of that Simpsons episode with the escalators
over the prison walls and revolving doors immediately come to mind.
And they did for me too. But what I witnessed while at Oak Hill
made me think twice about the way Wisconsin deals with its prison
population.

Sitting down to lunch the other day, it was the same old story:
\I was up at 7:45 this morning!"" while another friend of mine
remarked how much she was looking forward to her three-hour lab
later in the day. Having just woken up, I leaned back in my chair
and smiled. Damn, it's good to be a political science major.
