Mimi Colyer responsible for Badger volleyball’s early success

The Wisconsin Badgers shut down No. 21 Georgia Tech and Marquette University, continuing their five-game winning streak because of outside hitter Mimi Colyer’s impact

After road wins against No. 21 Georgia Tech and Marquette, the No. 7 ranked Wisconsin volleyball team continued their winning streak with five straight sweeps, largely due to the performance of senior transfer Mimi Colyer.

The Badgers have had an electric start to the 2025 season, going 6-1 in seven non-conference games with their only loss coming  to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns.

Throughout the season, the Badgers have managed to shut down opponents on the defensive and offensive end, allowing just 9.7 kills per set on average, compared to Wisconsin’s average of 14.8. The Badgers also have the third best hitting percentage in the country, with an average of .338 percent, compared to the .162 percent combined average of their opponents.

Outside hitter Colyer has been a big factor in the team's success.

Colyer started off her NCAA career playing for Oregon. In her three years at Oregon, the outside hitter received numerous honors, some of the most memorable including AVCA National Freshman of the Year in 2022, AVCA All-America Honorable Mention in 2023 and AVCA Northwest Region Player of the Year in 2024.

Colyer finished off her junior season at Oregon ranked seventh for career kills in university history (1,461), as well as eighth in career service aces (123).

Continuing her success, Colyer is only the second player in the history of Division I women’s volleyball to receive the AVCA National Player of the Week for two different schools, once for Oregon in 2024 and once for Wisconsin this past week.

Colyer has shown great promise in her first year with the Badgers: she currently leads the team in kills, with 112 of the team’s 340 total kills so far Colyer is also first in the Big Ten — and  fourth in the country — in kills per set, averaging 5.09 kills per set.

Colyer recorded double-digit kill totals in all seven matches so far this season. In a competitive game against Kansas, Colyer achieved a season high of 26 kills in just one game, leading the team to a victory in the fifth set.

Mimi Colyer and the Badgers will continue their season with two upcoming home games, hosting the No. 15 Florida Gators on Sept. 21 and their first Big Ten matchup against the New Jersey Rutgers on Sept. 26.
