Madison’s Urban Design Commission delayed approval for the Hub at Madison II and heard new plans from the developers of construction for Madison College in a meeting Wednesday.
UDC delayed approval after the project management requested more time to improve design.
"Hopefully they will have improved the design on a couple areas that looked difficult," UDC Chair Dick Wagner said. "They didn't really tell us exactly what would be improved, but part of it I guess is the top part and how it presents itself."
The Hub II would be located on parcel of the 500 block of University Avenue, just steps away from the original Hub apartment complex on State Street, which is nearing completion.
Standing 12 floors tall, the Hub II would include similar options as its sister building, such as a pool terrace and sand volleyball court. It would house 295 apartments and have around 9,230 feet of retail space.
The developers previously requested more time to improve their design and faced criticism from the UDC in February. UDC members previously criticized the Hub II for not maintaining downtown Madison’s traditional style.
The construction at Madison College, which failed to gain approval, included the addition of a one-story building to expand the college’s culinary and baking program. UDC members criticized the new designs, saying they did not improve from previous ones.
Hamid Noughani, a developer from Assemblage Architects, said they worked to address UDC’s criticism.
“We received your comments well and did not ignore them,” Noughani said.
