Williamson Street fire damages home, displaces occupants

The Madison Fire Department responded to a 911 call Monday night made by MFD paramedics who drove by a house at 1138 Williamson St. that had filled with smoke and flames, according to a city of Madison press release.

Occupants evacuated the house after smelling smoke and hearing a smoke alarm go off near the back of the house, according to Division Fire Chief Ronald Schwenn. By the time they left, heavy smoke had filled the air.

Firefighters arrived at the home four minutes after receiving the call and put out the flames within minutes, which started on the first floor and spread to the second. The American Red Cross is assisting the two residents who are currently unable to live in their home.

No damage estimates have been made and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the release.

The fire, although across the street from a candlelight vigil in honor of Tony Robinson, was unrelated to the event, Schwenn said.
