Suspect kicks man unconscious near State Street bar Sunday

A bouncer interrupted two men about to fight outside of a bar on the 100 block of State Street early Sunday morning, according to a release.

The men were pushing and fighting each other when one fell to the ground. The employee hoped to de-escalate the situation by holding him down, Madison Police Department Spokesperson Joel DeSpain said in the release.

The second man kicked the 38-year-old Poynette, Wis. victim twice in the head, knocking him unconscious, according to DeSpain. The suspect then fled the scene.

DeSpain said in the release the intoxicated victim regained consciousness after several minutes, but medical staff took him to a hospital as a precaution. They did not believe he suffered serious injury, according to the report.

Police describe the suspect as an African American in his early 30s with short hair, a goatee and a knee-length leather jacket over a red plaid or checkered shirt and blue jeans, according to DeSpain.
