Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne cleared three Madison police officers of any criminal wrongdoing Friday in the August civilian shooting death of Charles Carll.
Ozanne said in a press release a briefing from the the Medical Examiner’s Office, which performed the crime scene investigation, summary reports and witness statements, which were “consistent with each other” and other evidence contributed to his conclusion.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. Aug. 17, after officers responded to reports of domestic violence at 5214 Hammersley Rd. According to the release, Carll advanced toward one of the three responding officers wielding a knife, and the officer fired when a Taser proved unsuccessful to stop Carll.
“Responding to that threat with deadly force is permitted under the law,” Ozanne said in the release.
Ozanne’s ruling states that no further investigation into the matter is “merited,” and the three involved officers will not be held criminally liable.
