A city project currently underway to redevelop two blocks of lakeside property near the Capitol took a step forward Wednesday when four developing firms submitting their company’s qualifications and project concepts.
The Judge Doyle Square Committee will now review the credentials of JDS Development, Journeyman Group, Mortenson Development, Inc. and North Central Group, and nominate the most qualified candidates for a formal interview.
When completed, a hotel with accommodations for at least 240 guests along with spaces for retailers, offices, residents and restaurants will replace the Government East parking garage on Judge Doyle Square, located between the Capitol and Monona Terrace.
Project Director George Austin said the goal is to “create an active streetscape,” and promote the Monona Terrace’s economic impact by increasing its capacity to host business conventions.
Austen said of the development firms, “They’re all strong teams,” and there is a possibility the committee will select all four to interview. Committee members will conduct interviews from May 15 to June 30 before formally requesting the most qualified candidates submit official design plans.
The entire redevelopment is scheduled to be completed by 2018-’19.
