State legislators receive support for removing special needs vouchers from state budget

An organization of parents against special needs vouchers expressed support for a bipartisan effort to remove the vouchers from the state budget in a press release Monday.

The budget currently provides vouchers for special needs students to attend a private school of their choice.

State Sen. Michael Ellis, R-Neenah, and state Rep. Penny Bernard Schaber, D-Appleton, said they would “lead the fight” against special needs vouchers at a Neenah community event April 18, which was hosted by Stop Special Needs Vouchers, according to the press release.

At the event, Ellis said he was concerned funding for vouchers would negatively impact public schools as well as taxpayers, according to the release

Ellis said at the event the legislature would likely face a long battle to pass the budget if it does not remove the special needs voucher proposal, according to the release.

Bernard Schaber said she would not vote for a budget that included special needs vouchers, according to the release.
