A former aide to Gov. Scott Walker received a two year prison sentence and five years of probation for embezzlement Tuesday, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
A Milwaukee County court found Tim Russell, former chief of staff to Walker, guilty of stealing over $20,000 from Operation Freedom, a group that raises funds to assist veterans and their families.
Russell’s actions came to light during the John Doe probe, which investigated illegal activity in the Milwaukee County Executive office in 2010 when Walker had the post.
According to District Attorney Bruce Landgraf, Russell used his power under Walker’s administration to get access to the funds, the State Journal reported. He then used the money to pay for two vacations and a trip to help with Herman Cain’s presidential campaign.
Walker himself is not a target of the John Doe investigations.
