Police use Taser on drunken driving suspect and pepper spray crowd

After police Tasered a Madison man who resisted arrest, officers used pepper spray on a rowdy crowd preventing police from leaving with the suspect late Saturday night.

Police caught up to Spencer Eckstein, 20, at the intersection of Lake Street and Langdon Street after he drove recklessly and hit multiple parked cars on Gorham Street, according to Police Officer Paul Jacobsen.

Eckstein left his vehicle in an attempt to flee the police, and a secondĀ  officer near the area caught up to Eckstein trying to enter an apartment building on Lake Street, Jacobsen said in a police report.

After police used a Taser to subdue Eckstein, a crowd of 15 to 20 people blocked officers from leaving with the suspect and threw projectiles towards the officers, Jacobsen said.

When the crowds did not follow orders to move from the exit, officers used pepper spray to break up the crowd allowing the officers and suspect to move to a safer area, according to police.
