Bomb squad investigates suspicious package near campus

The Orchard Street and Capitol Court area were determined safe after bomb squad investigated suspicious bottles Tuesday afternoon.

According to UW-Madison police, a UWPD security officer identified a suspicious item between 1223 Capitol Ct. and the Islamic Center of Madison.

"Part of the concerns was that it was suspicious and that it looked out of place and odd enough that we needed to investigate," UWPD Sgt. Aaron Chapin said.

As a precautionary measure, both buildings were evacuated and additional resources called in, Chapin said.

UWPD utilized explosive detection K-9s, the Dane County Sheriff's Bomb Squad and Madison Fire Department Hazmat Team for assistance, according to UWPD.

While the item was not found to be explosive, the bomb squad "disrupted" the package, meaning the item was examined and found "safe and not a risk to anyone," according to Chapin.

UWPD determined the Orchard Street and Capitol Court area safe at 3:35 p.m. Both the surrounding buildings and roads reopened, according to a UWPD statement.

"We are continuing to do follow-up," Chapin said.
