The Madison police officer who shot and killed a suspected armed robber Wednesday was identified Thursday night.
Officer David Retlick, 33, joined the Madison Police Department in May 2007 after serving five years as an officer in a different jurisdiction, according to a statement. He currently patrols the city's South District.
Retlick responded to an armed robbery at Cousins Subs, 1124 S. Park St. The suspect had allegedly entered with a handgun and then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Retlick located a man similar in appearance to the suspect at the corner of Whittier and Lakeside Streets. He and the suspect struggled until the officer had to use ""deadly force"" against him, according to a police report.
More details will be released Friday.
