UW-Madison provost search narrowed to three candidates

The finalists for the UW-Madison provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs position gave presentations to UW-Madison officials May 27, May 28 and June 1 and are now entering the final phase of the selection process.

The three finalists are Irwin Goldman, associate dean for research in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Paul DeLuca, Jr., associate dean for research and graduate studies in the School of Medicine and Public Health; and Richard Moss, chair of the Department of Physiology in the School of Medicine and Public Health.

According to David Musolf, UW-Madison secretary of the faculty, a search-and-screen committee of UW-Madison officials and Associated Students of Madison members selected the finalists in late May.

He said Chancellor Biddy Martin will conduct an exit interview with each finalist before announcing her decision.

Julie Underwood is currently acting as the interim provost until the new provost is selected. She filled the position last fall after former provost Patrick Farrell resigned.

According to Musolf, the provost position is broad and includes duties like serving as the chancellor in the chancellor's absence and addressing diversity and climate issues on campus.

""While the chancellor is responsible for the external functioning of the university, the provost is responsible for the internal functioning of the university,"" he said. ""It's a dual partnership.""

Musolf said he felt the committee selected three strong candidates and encourages students to visit secfac.wisc.edu to decide for themselves which candidate is best.
