Free StudentPrint t-shirts line Bascom Hill

StudentPrint, a UW-Madison non-profit, student-run print shop, will line Bascom Hill with free t-shirts Wednesday.

Students will see the shirts hanging on laundry lines free for the taking from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. StudentPrint hopes to promote awareness about their organization through the t-shirt installment.

It is an unfortunate truth that people do not know about us because we are the only non-profit print shop on campus,"" said Frank Remley, UW-Madison senior and StudentPrint co-print manager.

Remley joined the StudentPrint staff in the spring of 2005 to earn money in a place where he did not need, ""to wash dishes, clean toilets, or use a cash register.""

As a staff member and print manager, Remley said he has learned useful techniques in graphic design, printing and business management.

""We want students to know that we're available and how to access us,"" said sophomore Ajit Iyer of StudentPrint.

""We're hoping people wear the shirts that they take and that gets our name out as well.""

According to its website, the organization began in 1972 because of the dire need for student organizations' advertisements and campus materials. In 1998, StudentPrint added course readers to their list of services in attempt to acquire money lost in past years.

Forty-five percent of StudentPrint's yearly revenue derives from these course readers, according to its website.

Today, the business also provides printing and design services to produce flyers, business cards and letterheads.

According to Iyer, the organization gains additional business through the Associated Students of Madison's funded student organizations.

""ASM is a huge business provider for us,"" Iyer said.

StudentPrint is located in the basement of the Memorial Union. Store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for the academic year.

The organization plans to move to the new Student Activities Center once completed at the renovated University Square in the spring of 2009.
