Mind Your Morsels with the UW Dietetics and Nutrition Club

Q: How safe are all-natural\ dietary supplements like ginkgo biloba, echinacea, St. John's Wort, etc.? A: There are a lot of ""all-natural"" dietary supplements that are sold over-the-counter at your local Walgreens store. They promise a variety of natural health treatments from weight loss, to a cure for the common cold, or even a hangover.  

 

 

 

However, the FDA does not regulate these supplements. Herbal therapies fall under the category of ""food supplements"" and thus, the products are not heavily tested. 

 

 

 

Scientists are unaware of the adverse side effects that these products can have on an individual. A lot of these herbal supplements have already been shown to have strong interactions when paired with other prescription drugs. As a result, if you choose to use any type of dietary supplements, treat them as drugs and not just ""all-natural"" food derivatives. Also, make sure to check with your physician before using any type of over-the-counter supplement, even if it is ""all-natural.""
