Memorial Library to ban indoor cell phone use due to student feedback

Memorial Library has implemented a new policy that prohibits patrons from using cellular phones in all library locations aside from the West Corridor.

University officials made the change after more than 90 percent of patrons who took a survey indicated they thought cell phone users should relocate to another part of the library while taking a call.

Additionally, 62 percent of respondents said they have been bothered by cell phone use in the library.

Ringing phones and loud conversations, often conducted on cell phones, are disturbing to patrons and staff alike,\ Memorial Library Director Lee Konrad said. ""This will help foster and maintain the scholarly environment patrons expect of a major research library without forcing cell phone users to give up the convenience that having a cell phone provides."" The change, effective immediately, will not apply to any other campus library.
