Frats teach sexual assault prevention

At a university the size of UW-Madison, one does not often hear of students taking on the role of professors.

But since Fall 2005, the facilitators of Fraternity Action Coalition, a one-credit seminar through the School of Social Work, have been doing just that.

As April's Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities come to a close, FAC students continue with their studies. Consisting of male fraternity member facilitators\ and participants, students teach students preventive strategies to help end sexual violence on campus.

""We're just looking to battle some of the stereotypes the Greek system faces and to prevent and educate people about sexual assault and domestic violence,"" said Noah Annes, an FAC facilitator, vice president of the Interfraternity Council and member of Delta Upsilon. ""By being part of this class, we can educate ourselves and do our best to improve the situation and make our parties, the language we use, everything we do, safer for women.""

The program began last spring, led by three non-Greek facilitators and continued this fall when former students became facilitators. Women from the Delta Project and UW-Madison's chapter of Sex Out Loud also contribute to class facilitation and the curriculum.

Annes said the students-teaching-students approach worked well.

""That's our hope,"" Annes said of the class and the FAC teaching method. ""To keep it sustainable, to keep the cycle going.""
