Gov. Jim Doyle officially signed legislation Friday protecting food manufacturers, marketers, advertisers, distributors and sellers from obesity lawsuits brought on by customers blaming the fast food industry for their health problems.
The bill's author, state Sen. Tom Reynolds, R-West Allis, said in a statement he was happy with the governor's approval, noting an identical bill was vetoed by Doyle last session.
The goal of my bill is to place responsibility on individuals for the choices they make. Blaming the food industry does nothing to remedy the obesity epidemic or to encourage personal responsibility,\ Reynolds said. ""This bill also addresses the disturbing trend of abusive and frivolous lawsuits targeting the deep pockets of large corporations. I want the bill to send a clear message to trial attorneys that these abusive lawsuits will not be tolerated in Wisconsin.""
