Alternative Breaks Committee speaker touts immigration's vitality to the United States

The Alternative Breaks Committee sponsored a trip to UW-Madison Wednesday, bringing a witness to their works in San Juan, Texas to campus.

Their witness was Ofelia de los Santos, a lawyer working with LUPE, an organization that assists poor and undocumented immigrants in southern Texas.

Santos said the efforts of alternative breakers\ mean a great deal to the community.

""We enjoy having them, it's good for our workers and for our members to see that there are people in the rest of the country who care,"" Santos said.

The committee, which is part of the Wisconsin Union Directorate, sponsored more than 30 trips to San Juan over the past 16 years, according to Sarah Anderson, the group's advisor.

""We felt it was time after that long to invite someone from that agency that we've been working with back here,"" Anderson said.
