Area high schoolers ride home with parents after police bust college party

After Madison police responded to a report of a disturbance on the 800 block of E. Gorham St. early Sunday morning, parents were called to pick up their children–68 Madison Memorial High School students who received underage drinking tickets.

According to the press release, police first responded a large house party, and found most of the revelers had not yet received their high school diploma.

Since Memorial High School is located at 201 S. Gammon Rd.—more than 11 miles from East Gorham Street—Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said this occurrence is not common.

Most high school kids figure out another way to drink. [I] think it's the brother or sister of a Memorial kid,\ he said. ""Since [the house] was so far east, residents called the police because they don't put up with that.""

Madison Police Lt. Pat Malloy said that it was unusual because of the abundance of high school students, but the party was not considered large. However, Malloy said it was chaotic at times because of the number of young people.

One person was taken to University detox because of their level of intoxication, the report said.
