Heterosexual marriage, predating the law and the Constitution, is a sociological and anthropological reality, not primarily a legal one. Laws concerning marriage simply recognize and regulate an institution that already exists. Today too many arrogantly believe we can improve upon this ancient and universal institution.
Voting on the same-sex marriage ban is an excellent opportunity for Wisconsin citizens to participate in democracy and voice their opinion on the issue. Supporters of the resolution believe it's up to the people, not judges, to preserve traditional marriage. They hope to avoid degrading the institution of marriage down to something similar to a hunting license.
The same-sex marriage amendment is a first-class law that, contrary to what some believe, is nondiscriminatory. All adults (including gays) have the right to marry, subject to age and blood relation limitations as well as finding an opposite-sex spouse. There is not a single marriage license application that inquires as to a person's sexual orientation. Everybody must meet the same marriage requirements and this is fair.
Wisconsin needs the gay marriage amendment for many reasons. By making gay marriages legal, society's understanding of what marriage is and the institution's requirements will transform. Gay relationships, which are proven to lack both stability and fidelity, are unlikely to change to fit the traditional model of lifelong, faithful marriage. Instead, society's expectations of marriage will change in response to the gay model, thus leading to a further weakening of the institution of marriage.
Denmark legalized gay marriage in 1989, and the Danish idea of family has never been the same. Since then, half of all children born are born out of wedlock. This fractured family structure developing in Denmark is alarming to social scientists because if this disturbing trend continues, many children will have multiple moms, dads, and perhaps 12 grandparents with dozens of half-siblings. We will live in a world where children are just shuffled around in a selfish environment where people think mostly about themselves, and millions of children end up in abusive foster care. Research shows that children are more likely to be abused when they are not with their biological parents, and in gay marriage, this is impossible.
