A bill proposed in the state Assembly would set specific standards for school policy and professor conduct to ensure the rights of students in the UW System, according to its author, Marlin Schneider, D-Wisconsin Rapids.
The bill outlines 14 points, which govern UW System policy from textbook weight to parking regulations during move-in and move-out times.
Under the bill, UW officials would have to take away tenure or six-months' salary from faculty members whose advising causes students to stay in school longer than they intended to.
The bill also requires professors to sanction requests to add a class within five days of receiving the request.
Selected provisions of the bill:
'Require an instructor teaching a class with only one examination to allot a week of study time before the exam.
'Prohibit an instructor from requiring students to purchase or use a text the instructor has authored for the course without obtaining the approval of the student government.
'Require an instructor to excuse student absences from
exams due to funerals for family members or fianc??s.
'Direct the UW Board of Regents to adopt maximum weight standards for textbooks.
'Suspend all parking rules for the week preceding and following each semester.
'Prohibit the Board of Regents from entering into a contract that grants naming rights to a UW arena, playing field or stadium.
'Limit the work day of a medical intern to 16 hours.
