In a partisan vote, the state Assembly passed a bill Tuesday requiring doctors to inform women seeking abortions that their fetuses can feel pain. Gov. Jim Doyle's office told The Daily Cardinal he plans to veto the bill.
'The governor feels that medical decisions should be made between medical professionals and patients,' Doyle's spokesperson Anne Lupardus said. 'We don't need the legislature telling doctors how to do their jobs.'
Senate Bill 138 passed the Assembly with a vote of 61 to 34. The vote went almost according to party lines with all Republicans supporting the bill and only three Democrats supporting it.
The bill passed the Senate Sept. 27 by a vote of 21 to 12.
Planned Parenthood blasted the bill, calling it 'anti-women' and 'anti-health care,' and thanked the governor for his expected veto.
