In a win for student representation on the UW System Board of Regents, the state Senate unanimously passed a measure to add another student regent to the board Thursday.
The Board of Regents, which is responsible for setting the policy for Wisconsin's system of state universities, currently has one student representative, Christopher Semenas.
However, while Semenas'a UW-Parkside senior'represents students in a general capacity, the newly-created regent position must be over 24 years old and is to represent the views of non-traditional students, such as those who are employed or who are parents.
The United Council of UW Students declared the bill's passage 'an extremely positive step' and said it hopes the governor will sign the bill into law.
The term of the new regent, who is required to be an undergraduate, will last two years.
Candidates for the new position will be drawn from recommendations made by elected representatives of student governments at the various UW System schools.
