Women's hockey dominates Catamounts

Last weekend was all about domination for the No. 2 ranked women's hockey team. A pair of 5-0 shutouts over Vermont brought the women's hockey team's record to 3-1-0 overall.

Head coach Mark Johnson called it \six great periods of hockey"" and stressed the important experience his team got playing four lines in both games.

While most of the bench got playing time, the regulars continued to play great. Junior Sara Bauer notched two goals and an assist on Saturday and Bobbi-Jo Slusar had a goal and an assist while being on the ice for four of the five goals in the second game.

Bauer and fellow starter Jinelle Zaugg set the tone early with a quick two-on-one breakaway and found the back of the net 29 seconds into the game. Bauer fed Zaugg a beautiful pass across the ice, leaving her with an open shot that sailed past Vermont goaltender Shivaun Siegl.

The Badgers went on to score two more times in the period with Slusar scoring at 10:06 and senior Cyndy Kenyon scoring at 16:50 on the power play.

After two goals in the second period, much of the third and fourth string saw significant playing time and the 5-0 victory was assured.

Vermont only managed 14 shots on goal in the second game compared to the Badger 42 shots. However, the Badgers' offense was even more potent on Saturday, when UW set the all-time school mark for most shots on goal with 68.

Saturday's 5-0 victory was comparable to Sunday's, with the Badgers scoring early with two first period goals. Freshman Angie Keseley scored first and Bauer, who played a part in the next three goals, found an opening and scored the second goal with 3:40 left in the first.

Bauer then found senior Sharon Cole for the first goal in the second period and notched her second goal of the game at 14:11.

Zaugg, who opened Sunday's game with a goal, scored the fifth goal of Saturday's game at 11:50 into the third period.

Johnson saw a lot of positives in the weekend sweep, but stressed the importance of working on special teams in preparation for next weekend's road trip to Minnesota State. The Badgers were only one-for-eight on converting power plays this weekend despite scoring 10 goals in the series.

Next weekend will be the first road game for the Badgers this season. The puck will drop at 7:07 on Friday night.
