Nothing says all-around athlete like being able to compete skillfully in multiple track and field events. Junior Melissa Talbot fits that mold perfectly, as she finished second in the heptathlon Thursday at the Drake Relays in Iowa, netting herself an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Talbot ended up with a total of 5,275 points, a personal best and second best ever for a UW athlete. Her best performances were in the track portion, winning the 200-meter dash, placing second in the 100-meter dash, and third in the 800-meter run. Though she seems built for speed, strength does not seem to be a weakness either, as she attained a sixth place finish in the javelin while earning a 10th place finish in the shot put. Rounding out her achievements were a fifth place spot in the long jump and a ninth place finish in the high jump.
The rest of the women's track team will compete in the relays on Friday and Saturday at the Drake Relays while some of the squad will be at the Loras Open in Iowa on Saturday. The distance runners will take part in the Cardinal Invitational in California on Sunday.
On the men's side of things, the team will try to continue their recent string of impressive performances. The men were also at the Drake relays Thursday but as of press time the results were not posted.
