Former ASM Vice Chair will pay back stipend, travel expenses

Former Associated Students of Madison Vice Chair Cedric Lawson will be required to pay back more than $1,000 to the university in the wake of his resignation last week, according to an ASM source who wished to remain anonymous.

Lawson, who abdicated his position after it was revealed that he was not actually enrolled at UW-Madison, owes $750 he received as a stipend for the vice chair position and another $486.40 in travel expenses, the source said.

Lawson will not, however, be required to pay back an additional $346.20 in travel expenses because, as the source said, it was used appropriately.

ASM Chair and UW-Madison senior Emily McWilliams expressed disappointment with the situation, saying Lawson acted inappropriately by not telling ASM of his status as a non-UW-Madison student.

\It was disingenuous on [Lawson's] part to not tell us at the beginning that this was happening because now we're in the situation where we have to get the money remanded back to us,"" she said.

McWilliams said Lawson did not maliciously authorize the travel expenses, but nevertheless will still be required to repay them.

""Basically, it was a mistake,"" she said. ""But it's still a mistake that he's responsible for and he knows that.""
