Alcohol license shortage persists

The Alcohol License Review Committee met Wednesday to discuss depleting alcohol licenses in Madison.

\There is state legislation that says you can only have a certain number of licenses called reserve licenses,"" said Ald. Warren Onken, District 3. ""We are at the very end of those licenses.""

A reserve license allows businesses to serve both hard liquor and beer.

The ALRC is allowed to delegate five remaining reserve licenses to businesses that applied for them. Presently five businesses have applied, but there is no guarantee they will receive a license because any business can apply and every business is subject to the same review process, Onken said.

The ALRC will hold a ""special meeting"" to discuss the procedure of license distribution after the last five licenses have been used to avoid the same confusion in the future.

""The conclusion here tonight,"" Onken said, ""is we need to talk about it and think about it more.""
