The State Assembly voted against a bill introduced by state Rep. Spencer Black, D-Madison, on Tuesday, to ban lawyer fees for officials accused of trading legislation for campaign contributions. Currently, public funds are used to pay the legal bills of legislators.
The Republican-controlled Assembly decided against the bill, which would ban the use of taxpayer dollars to defend an official charged with breaking the new ban on \pay-to-play"" politics.
Gov. Jim Doyle is seeking legal action to stop the use of tax dollars for legal fees for those connected with the legislative corruption scandal, and recovery of tax dollars already used to pay for their defense, which totals nearly $900,000.
