According to UW System officials, targeted minority student enrollment increased system-wide by 63 percent from 1991 to 2001.
Targeted minorities are defined in the report as Hispanics, blacks, American Indians and those defined by statute as Southeast Asians.
The report showed the number of blacks increased 45 percent from 755 to 1,097. Hispanics increased from 468 to 836, a 79 percent increase. Southeast Asians increased 164 percent from 177 to 467. American Indians increased 10 percent from 224 to 247, increasing the least of the groups included in the report.
The report also documented decreases in minority numbers in terms of the number of black students who stayed for a second year at the UW System institutions at which they began. 64.8 percent of black students who entered in fall 1990 stayed for a second year while 64.7 percent who enrolled in fall 2000 stayed.
