UW housing should not impede democracy
The foundation of a democracy is the people. Therefore, I would think the housefellows in University Housing would be delighted to see candidates Echnaton Vedder and Tom Powell talking with residents of the dorms the weekend before elections. What better way is there for elected officials to understand the issues their constituents care about than knocking on their doors and having conversations with them?
When I was living in the dorms, I would have been delighted to get to know the people I was voting for so I could get a better idea of who I was electing to represent me at the county and city levels. Powell and Vedder gain a lot of credibility in my eyes when I read that they have been spending their time talking to students in the dorms instead of searching out corporate donations. This is exactly what candidates are supposed to do. I don't understand why University Housing would kick them out of the dorms for that.
Plan 2008 campaign looks for student input
ASM Campaign for Plan 2008 believes that, on the UW-Madison campus, many people are interested in working to improve campus climate, which Chancellor Wiley has stated is his number one priority. Unfortunately, many do not know how they can help. Because of this, we have created a campus climate survey to find out what makes this campus a welcoming and enjoyable place for students of color. The information gathered will be passed on to people working to improve campus climate. With this information, they can use existing programs'which students have cited as effective'as models for their work. Look for these surveys on displays in the unions, the Southeast Recreational Facility, the Natatorium, College and Memorial Libraries, and both University Health Services locations. ASM Campaign for Plan 2008 is asking students of color to please fill out our campus climate surveys so that we can help guide others in making this campus the best place it can be for all students.
