Senate OKs Gaylord Nelson building for UW

Controversy exists over renaming UW-Madison's Institute for Environmental Studies after Gaylord Nelson, the well-known pioneer in the environmental movement and founder of Earth Day who also served as Wisconsin governor and U.S. senator.

The bill to rename the institute won by a voice vote in the state Senate Tuesday and now faces the Assembly.

Some opponents believe this would deny the university a source of revenue potential. Environ-mental Studies Institute director Tom Yuill told The Capital Times that naming rights are usually sold for large sums of money, and naming the institute after Nelson will bring in no revenue.
