SALT LAKE CITY'Under fire to reform a judging system that last week produced one of the biggest scandals in the history of the Winter Olympics, the president of the International Skating Union proposed sweeping changes Monday in the way figure skating is scored.
The proposal, described by ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta as \a total revolution' was approved unanimously by the ISU's executive council. The reform will scrap the traditional perfect 6.0 score and use a system of double-digit scores based on points for the difficulty and execution of jumps, spins and other elements on a scale to be determined by the ISU's technical committee.
In perhaps the most stunning of changes, the judging panel would be expanded from nine to 14, but only seven of those scores would be randomly chosen to count toward the mark for each skater or pair, limiting the possibility of a repeat of the alleged improprieties at the Salt Lake Games.
