Have you ever wanted to make your own mummy? Researchers at Long Island University wanted to do just that.
By following instructions recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus and others, they set about removing organs and packing salts into the body of a deceased Baltimore man who had donated his body to science.
They then left the body for 35 days, and when they returned, the body had not rotted away.
The mummy actually looked exactly like mummies that were made 3,000 years ago, meaning that 3,000 years of storage has little effect on real mummies.
The mummy is now 7 years old, and after the researchers applied traditional oils, spices and wood shavings, it has shown no signs of deterioration and the final touches gave the mummy a more lifelike look.
