Motorists must change lanes for new state law

A new state law, put into effect Dec. 1, requires drivers to give police and other emergency personnel more space on the sides of Wisconsin's highways.

According to a Wisconsin State Journal report, the law requires drivers to change lanes whenever possible when approaching an emergency vehicle stopped within 12 feet of the paved roadway. If drivers cannot change lanes because of traffic conditions, they must slow down until past the emergency vehicle.

Drivers who disobey the new law face fines between $125.90 and $458 and license suspensions of between 90 days and two years.
